an exposé on ’80s music, part 2

“oh, he’s very popular ed. the sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. they think he’s a righteous dude.”

by popular demand (and another bout of boredom) i present to you, dear reader, another sampling of fine, fine music from that wonderfully ludicrous decade known as the 1980s.

ready?

then let’s get on with it:

first up, as promised, a little number from a scandinavian band known as aha. the song, “take on me” is a great, great tune and catchy as all hell.

see, this is what i’m talking about. bad hair, bad clothes, but great music. in fact, it spawned one of my most favorite family guy moments to date:

god i love it. so much.

next, we got dexy’s midnight runners with “come on eileen.”

truly, they are birmingham’s best. who knows why such a country-ish ballad rock song combo became so popular. and those overalls? classic. it’s interesting to see how many of these one-hit wonders were from outside america. yes, we had our own. plenty of em.

like this guy. falco (from germany) and his über-hit “rock me amadeus.”

okay, now that video disturbs me. like, a lot. cocaine’s a helluva drug, eh?

anyway, how about some “rio” action courtesy of duran duran.

you know, a big reason why i’m posting these vids is because they really are windows into the past. how we felt about the world back then. how everyone seemed to have an “us versus them” mentality (thank you very much, cold war). styles were so intermingled. it’s crazy, really. truly fascinating. now, i’m a big fan of duran duran and i love this song. so free and so fresh and…yeah, just lovely.

okay, and lastly for this part deux is non other than the…1985 chicago bears singing the “super bowl shuffle.” yeah, this brings you back. it’s so bad, so very, very bad. but it is so quintessentially ’80s that i had to include it. see for yourselves.

so craptastic. i really like “samurai” mike. nice glasses, dingbat. and it actually looks like they’re playing those intstruments! huzzah!

be sure to check back next week as part 3 of this 4 part series relishes those wonderfully hard-edged rock ballads you rock out to in bars — can you say mr. mister and def leopard?

ciao.
