Midwestern Gothic

Unique, ubiquitous, and on the tip of your tongue.

Rob had a vision, a great idea of uniting a sarcastic, mangy group of writers in order to tell the tales no one else had the guts to. His notion became Midwest Gothic. He enjoys retrieving animals from the humane society for a short time before returning them, believes that hammocks are proof of life on other planets, and is adamant that there is (strangely enough) a wonderful mythology to share about Michigan and the Midwest (where he has made his home his entire life). Check out a listing of his posts here.

Matt was born and raised in Jackson, Michigan. he is in love with budgets, has a crush on homebrewing, and really dislikes stupid people (and, this being the Midwest, there is most definitely not a lacking of them). If he’s not at the horse races, you can usually find Matt reading about obscure eighteenth-century Flemish painters. Check out Matt’s posts here.

Jack is a second-generation farmer who has made his home in the Detroit-area for almost his entire life. He enjoys pruning banzai trees in the shape of famous clowns and chasing stray beams of sunlight as they disappear into the coming night. Jack is also our resident “techie,” which more or less means he’s dry-humping his computer any chance he gets (and, for the record, she is a hot piece of machinery). Check out all of Jack’s posts here.

Classic Jef is just that: classic. He redefined style in the early 90s with the “slap bracelet.” Yes, folks, that was him. Classic Jef enjoys tandem showering, bicycle races that go on for hours, and cheering for the Sunderland Association Football Club (the worst team in the English Premier League) with gusto. Classic Jef also maintains a more personal blog here. Oh, and feel free to browse Classic Jef’s Midwestern Gothic posts here.

Ryan is the most facetious bastard you’ll ever meet. Period. Chances are, you already have met him. And during this meet, Ryan probably stood by and watched you get mugged, then laughed and pointed and finished eating his kabob. That is why we love Ryan here at Midwestern Gothic-he has facetiousness coming out the wazoo. Ryan also enjoys crafting paper mache cookware, polishing rocks in his rock polisher, and feeding birds crushed up bits of alka-seltzer. Click here to view all of Ryan’s posts.

Nick is the newest addition to our intrepid reporting orgy. He’s a Michigan native and a long-time Lowell, Michigan lover who fancies things made out of wood and gets excited like a ten-year-old choir boy when he drives by IKEA. When Nick isn’t detailing his decorative cherry inlay veneer with walnut banding, you’ll find him selling maps to famous celebrity homes in the Midwest, checking himself into rehab purely to grade the cafeteria food, and trapping fireflies in the percolating dusklight and storing them in mason jars “just in case.” Check out what Nick’s written here.
